We start with two vital elements needed for thyroid and adrenal support – Iodine and Vitamin D. Number one, your body does not make Iodine, and your thyroid absolutely needs Iodine, which is supplied throught diet, to function properly. Number two, also for thyroid, Vitamin D plays an important support role. Now let me make what is perhaps a disturbing statement, “You are most probably deficient in Iodine, and maybe Vitamin D too!”  Yes, it may be true – studies conducted in Michigan showed over 95% of those tested had low Iodine levels, and Iodine is critical for proper thyroid functioning. Some say this is a global problem, and it may be a shame, because Iodine is available and cheap. If so many Michigan residents are deficient, we can assume those in nearby areas are too.  After all, this was part of what was known as the “Goiter Belt” years ago, where persons would show up at their doctor’s with enlarged necks due to their thyroid not receiving enough iodine. The Iodine had been depleted out of the soil. That’s why Iodine or Iodide was originally added to our salt.  Perhaps you live elsewhere, but it is likely that by today most soils lack Iodine and other critical nutrients like Selenium, which aids the thyroid as well. So Iodine is critical for everybody, but absolutely essential if you have thyroid problems.  Our bodies don’t get enough from the salt that we eat.  We have currently added Iodine to the diet through salt enhancement, but the problem is it is only added in small amounts to the white salt we consume. Unfortunately, this white salt has been processed and all the minerals have been removed.  So what you want to do is use only the unprocessed, natural sea salt that is usually pink or gray. This will have no Iodine, so to raise your levels, what you really need to do is mimic what the Japanese people do, and take Iodine pills or eat sea vegetables, or take kelp tablets and try to get your Iodine intake up to 10,000 or 12,000 mg per day, which is the average for the Japanese, who live longer on this planet than any other nationality.  They also have the lowest rate of breast cancer in any developed nation for their women.  Iodine is what your thyroid uses to create thyroid hormones, either 3 or 4 Iodine molecules, and all the other chemicals we are exposed to like bromine, fluoride, and chlorine interfere and block this Iodine we are getting, so we need to make sure we are getting adequate amounts to begin with to keep the thyroid functioning well. Vitamin D is also very important for health, and many people show low levels when tested. Vitamin D helps your thyroid, it lowers breast cancer risk, and probably most cancer risks; it helps improve your immune system for flu, for infections, and it lowers the risk of diabetes, high blood pressure, and even multiple sclerosis.  So your vitamin D Levels should be, that is, your 25 hydroxy Vitamin D levels should be, 50 to 80, and this is referenced per Dr. Hollick, who is a Vitamin D expert.  Studies have shown that women have 50% less breast cancer when their vitamin D level is 52 or above.  So it’s very important to work with your thyroid and your immune system by keeping your Vitamin D levels adequate too. Sunshine helps the  body make Vitamin D, so if you live in areas where the sun is not available for long periods you may be deficient unless your dietary intake is high.  One tip is to get out in the sunshine for short periods daily – it really does help you feel better and be healthier.
